Human Health Risks

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?
"We put in some kind of tank and throw ina as much field line as will easily fit on the lot and cover it all up. So what if a little water pools up or reaches the ditch? Ain't nobody died lately! What's the big deal? We're not talking about giving somebody a heart attack or cancer."

The "Big Deal" is that millions of people die every year due to waterborne disease(s) worldwide. While heart disease and cancer are the leading killers of Americans today, prior to this century, waterborne diseases were the major causes of human deaths.

WHAT IS A WATERBORNE DISEASE?
Waterborne diseases are caused by microorganisms that live and grow in the intestines (digestive tract) of human beings, and sometimes other animals. These disease causing microorganisms (pathogens) are passed on in the feces and get into the water supply. Another person can contract the disease by drinking the sewage-contaminated water. Diseases that are transmitted in this manner are waterborne diseases.

They include the following:

   Typhoid
   Paratyphoid
   Legionnaires Disease
   Bacillary Dysentery
   Cholera
   Amoebic Dysentery
   Giardiasis
   Hepatitis
   Polio
   Meningitis

All of these diseases and more can be transmitted to people through the improper disposal of septic tank wastes.
