Job Description

Education, Experience and Skill Requirements

Possess a high school diploma or GED, with college preferred.  At the time of appointment, the minimum requirement is to be certified by the TCFP as a Basic Inspector.  Candidate will additionally need to meet the minimum qualifications for TCLEOSE licensing as a basic peace officer at time of appointment or within 2 years.  A minimum of 2 years of technical experience in one or more of the following areas:  Fire Inspection, Building Inspection, Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Investigation, Fire Protection Systems Installation or Fire Prevention Education, is preferred.  Candidate should have training in NFPA Fire Inspections and Plan review, with certification in Plans review preferred; Inspection of Hazardous materials storage and handling, with preference to having certification as a Technician by TCFP.  Candidate shall maintain and renew all required certifications as required by the respective State certification agencies.  Demonstrate the ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy, quality of detailed work and timeliness to meet deadlines as required.  Have excellent reading, comprehension and writing skills with effective oral and written communication skills.  Have advance/expert proficiency with Microsoft Office professional software and knowledge of databases used within fire service.  Demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills.  Perform moderate to heavy dragging or lifting.  Be able to walk, stoop, bend, sit, climb, and crawl, sometimes while wearing SCBA and/or other protective clothing.  Modify work schedules to meet emergency response and project time lines.  Work for moderate to long periods without direct supervision.  Meet objectives with self-motivation and creative skills.  Think independently and work well in a fast paced environment.  Develop strong working relationships with others, and be an effective team member.  Handle sudden changing work conditions and assignments.  Be capable of, and cooperative in, working a flexible work schedule as defined by MCFMO management.  Have a working knowledge of government, association, and industry sources for effective programs.  Have a working knowledge and experience of emergency service delivery, preferably with volunteer or combination agencies.  May require up to 10% out-of-town travel, with occasional overnight stays.

Must have a valid Driver’s License and clear driving record.

Bi-lingual communications skills (English/Spanish) are highly desired.

Primary Duties

All positions within the Fire Inspection division will conduct code inspections of assigned occupancies located within the unincorporated areas of Montgomery County.  The inspections and/or plans reviews will be completed based on the type of the occupancy, code requirement for stated occupancy and hazardous material storage sites.  The inspector will at times respond to request, complaints, and/or in support of other government agencies.  Inspectors will at times be called upon to represent the County in legal matters pertaining to fire safety, code violations, and criminal activities.  The inspector will be responsible for interpreting policies, procedure, and laws and to guide others in interpretation; be able to provide input in the formulation of operating policies, procedures, and stated objectives.  Inspectors will also be called upon to assist with conducting other life safety events, such as conducting fire drills, and working with owner/occupants to ensure the highest life safety protection is in place.  The fire inspection process involves communicating and corresponding with the businesses, researching the history of the occupancies and reviewing hazardous material or other relative documentation, conducting the site inspections, documenting fire code violations, following up on prior inspections, and working with management on fire system maintenance issues until compliance is achieved.  Inspectors will be responsible for all other duties assigned by MCFMO management.
