Fraud, Waste & Abuse

Montgomery County is committed to maintaining a fair, ethical, and honest business environment for all county employees, customers, suppliers and anyone else with whom the county has a relationship. As part of our commitment, the Montgomery County Auditor provides a method to confidentially report a suspected incident of fraud, waste and abuse involving county property, money, or other financial resources.

Fraud
The misrepresentation of a material fact, knowingly or with reckless indifference to the truth, in order to obtain a benefit or payment to which one would normally not be entitled.

Waste
The negligent or extravagant expenditure of county funds, incurring of expenses, or misuse of county resources or property.

Abuse
The intentionally wrongful or improper use of county resources that can include the excessive or improper use of one’s position, in a manner contrary to its rightful or legally intended use.

Reporting Fraud, Waste & Abuse
If you have seen, suspect, or know someone is:
• Using County property, vehicles, equipment or resources for personal gain
• Intentionally misleading or cheating the County for financial gain

The Montgomery County Auditor encourages you to report your concern and offers confidential and secure methods of reporting. Employees, vendors, contractors, or citizens may report such information by letter or electronic form.

To report electronically, please provide the following:
To ensure a thorough understanding of the suspected fraud, waste, and/or abuse, and to ensure an effective investigation, it is important to provide as much detail as possible by including the following information (if known):

Clearly describe your concern (what you saw, heard and suspect)


Give dates, times, and locations when the incident occurred


Provide the names of all individuals involved including other witnesses


State if there is any supporting documentation such as a license plate or County vehicle numbers, cell phone video, addresses, invoice numbers, purchase order numbers, receipts, contracts, or other documents


Indicate if you would like a response with the results after we have investigated your concern by clicking "Yes" or "No".  If "Yes", please provide your contact information in the "Other Comments" section below. (A case number will be assigned and provided to you for future communications.)

Your report is confidential and secure and comes ONLY to the inbox of the County Auditor. The County Auditor will review reports for Human Resources or employment related issues and subsequently forward to Human Resources for investigation (e.g., employee fraudulently receiving benefits).

Respecting Your Anonymity
You have the option to remain anonymous. If you choose to disclose your identity, the Montgomery County Auditor's Office is committed to protecting your identity and confidentiality. However, please be aware that any information submitted may be subject to the Public Information Act, including name and contact information. Information submitted may also be disclosed to another state agency or law enforcement.
