Frequently Asked Questions

When I try to borrow something, I receive the error message "The library has reached its daily lending limit."
The library has a daily budget for Hoopla checkouts, and this message indicates that our budget is spent for the day. You will be able to borrow items again when the daily lending limit resets.

Does it cost anything to get a library card?
Your first library card is free!
If you lose your library card, it costs $2 to replace.

When can I get a library card?
Library cards are issued during open hours, except for 15 minutes prior to closing.

Where can I use my library card?
Library cards can be used at any MCMLS location, Lonestar College library locations, and most Harris County Libraries.

What is my PIN number?
The PIN number on your account is the last 4 digits of the phone number on file.

My contact information has changed. How can I update it?
Please visit any of our locations with a valid photo ID. If your ID does not have your current address, please bring a current bill, lease, car insurance, etc. that shows your new address.

I lost my card. What do I do?
Please visit any of our locations and bring a valid photo ID with the current address. The cost for a replacement card is $2.00. Cash or check is accepted.

I just got a replacement library card and can't access my ebooks. What do I do?
If you are using OverDrive, please contact your library so that staff can merge your digital checkouts and holds with your new card number. If you are using Hoopla, you can go to Settings > Library Settings in your account to change your library card and PIN number.

How can I view my account online?
You can view your holds and checkouts under My Account on the top menu. We also have mobile apps for managing your library account.

Why can't I access my account online?
Your library card may have expired or your fines may be over the $25 limit. Please call or visit any location for assistance.

What does "Privilege Has Expired" mean?
This means your library card has expired and needs to be renewed. Library cards expire every two years.

To renew your library card:

  • Please visit any of our 7 locations and bring your current photo ID with the correct address.

  • All fines must be paid at the time of renewal.

  • Full access library cards cannot be renewed online.
