Due to the growing demands on the South Regional Library, a new branch in the western area of The Woodlands was approved. The George & Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library opened to the public in the summer of 2005, and today serves more than 53,000 cardholders.
After a nomination by Congressman Kevin Brady, the branch was chosen as a finalist for the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service by the IMLS. Also in 2017, the Mitchell Library joined the Family Place Libraries national network, which provides the community with resources to help families nurture their children's development and early learning.
